engine weight for a 300zx drift car
Let's say I took out a vg30 out of my na and swapped in a sr20det. Would the loss in hp but gain in weight distribution be better than a vg30dett swap which gains weight but also gains hp? I think it would be for the best since in drifting weight, hp , and suspension has to be balanced.

Re: engine weight for a 300zx drift car
Your picking the wrong car for a drift car to begin with... It can be done, and George (1viadrft) drifts his on a daily basis...
But with that said. The Zed isnt an ideal dorifto car. The mounting would be tough to get right with an SR... Plus why would you go from Cast Iron 222hp engine (VG30DE) to an aluminum block 205hp engine... Even with the weight loss, it makes NO sense. There wouldnt be ample enough power to even get the car sideways. If you want a good drift engine set-up, and it is even cheaper than an SR20DET clip. Go with the RB20DET. They slide in pretty good, with custom mounting, driveshaft, radiator, and fans. It would be ideal for a dorifto Zed... George is dropping in an RB25DET. Re: engine weight for a 300zx drift car
Firstly: Are we talking Z31 or Z32? If you have a Z31 I would keep the VG or actually swap in an RB20DET... these came stock in the Z31's in Japan and bolt right on! The Z31's are light cars and are ideal for drifting with either motor! If you have a Z32... I have seen people swap in SR20DET's but I think this is pointless! 200-odd HP is not ideal to push around a monster like the ZED-32 for drift! Sure you can build an SR to 400+HP but at what cost? Pointless! Stay with the VG30DE! Or do as Wes mentioned! If you got the money! Use a lighter engine like the RB25DET!
Secondly: NO! The Z32 is not the best platform for drift! But if that is all you have... then you need to know that the Z32 has more than enough power to get sideways as both an NA or TT model! Why swap motors? Well you may want to be 'cool' and do a bad-ass JDM swap, plus a lighter RB engine (don't use an SR20 please!) will help out with weight problems! But... you can always keep the VG... build it up and lighten the car by adding lightweight panels, plexi-glass and ripping out the seats. Ever see or hear of the BLITZ/UTRAS ER34 4-door Skyline? It is about as heavy as Z with about 320+HP... You can have similar results! I say build up your VG!

Re: engine weight for a 300zx drift car
Ken 'Nomuken' Nomura's Blitz/URAS ER34 makes well over 400hp.

Re: engine weight for a 300zx drift car
Well, not all the time. I can be counted on for Nissans/Datsuns, a little Honda stuff, and vague info on what's happening in Europe. I'm trying to learn more about American cars now.hehe
I can't remember how much power exactly, but I remember reading from anywhere between 420-470hp.

Re: engine weight for a 300zx drift car
Maybe I'm wrong... I know there are two versions of that BLITZ/URAS D1 machine... Well, I stand corrected.... I admit my failing memory!
Anyhow... don't you think my advice is good?

Re: engine weight for a 300zx drift car
Hold on. I know first post. 300ZX is is my fav car and I have been thinking about it constantly. I thought the VG was 350Z's engine and the VQ30 was the 300Z's. Or have I just had my names backwards for a long time? I just had a conversation a few days ago about how confusable they are.
And the RB25 is the skyline engine isn't it? or am I wrong..... Again... But I hear you CAN put the skyline engine in the 300ZX but it's also really difficult isn't it? I am currently saving up for a 300Z and I use like, a 15 foot long truck to drift currently (I know, it's retarded, but fun and I alsmost killed myself today doing it) And I'm interested in the 300 cause it is FR and looks sweet. FR from what my drift crazy friend says is the best (Which is why he has a Silvia) for drifting. And I know the 300Z is huge but it's different and driftable, so I'm gonna run with it. Hell, I was reading an article in June's edition of Import Racer where a well known drifter has a SR20DET in a 350Z, and I think that's just retarded. Can anyone tell me if I am a complete moron or not?

Remember it this way: VQ35DE for the 350Z, and the VG30DE(TT) for the 300ZX. Quote:
The RB25DE(T) was just one of many motors used for the Skyline. Some even used four bangers.Quote:
There are some drawbacks to using one fo the RB motors. Since it's roughly twice as long(I6= one bank of six cylinders vs V6= two banks of three cylinders), an RB will throw off weight distribution a bit. I don't know the weight of the stock VG, but the RB could weigh more(RB25+tranny= ~720lbs). Quote:
