Replacing Steering Pump...

Hey guys... guess what I'm gonna do next weekend? Yeah my power steering pump has diahera and cannot keeo anything in... so I gotta replace it! Was just wondering with everyone's limitless knowledge... should I change anything else while I'm down there? Any Tips? I plan to work my way from the bottom up like when I achanged out my Alt...

Oh-yeah... this may sound stupid-but... if I clean out the undercarriage of my Z with degreaser and pressure-washer is it okay if I use degreaser and water on my alt.? It is filthy and grimey due to the fact that the power-steering vomited all-over it! I know this may sound stupid... look at me! I'm a regular newb!

Re: Replacing Steering Pump...

Nah George, even the seasoned members have questions... It's cool.

I used degreaser on my altenator... It appeared to work fine afterwards. And I could actually see silver and green for the first time ever.

But as for your PSP... I've never messed with those, Im not entirely sure. But I guess it would just be as simple as swapping anything else... Good luck with it.

(Now kiddies... See George drift? Now see George having to change out his Power Steering Pump? )

Re: Replacing Steering Pump...

Yeah... I guess drifting my beast was not so kind on the ol' steering pump! You should see my tires! Alignment is off!! Brakes are bad (well, I bought rotors... just haven't found the right pads)!!! And everyone wonders where my money goes! I can't even add more mods right now 'cus I'm trying to keep the Lady maintained!!! Damn... But I Love Her!

So I guess it's okay to wet the alt a little then? Are there any other hose are anything that should be replaced under there? I'm thinking of buying AMZ's lower radiator hard-pipe while I'm down there... just to be safe! After my heater hoses went out, I have been gradually changing any and all hoses around the engine!

Re: Replacing Steering Pump...

Yea I would HIGHLY recomend an aluminum lower-radiator hose... Esspecially in a Road/Race car.

Dude why dont you do what I did?

Have your Zed for road use... Baby the hell out of it. And have a 1989 240sx Straight-Up Drift car... Ghetto as hell, doughnut tires all the way around, primer, home-made fiber work, gutted interior, etc etc.

Those are the most fun cars... Cheap, and easy to fix.

Re: Replacing Steering Pump...

Yeah... I would like to get another 240sx... but right now the market is too expensive for me! $2500 for an '89 Pig-Nose with 200K? Pffffft! Forget that! I'd rather have a 240Z or 260Z beater! I'm actually looking into it 'cus I wanna eventually park the Lady and do an overhaul!

Eh, nothing is really around where the power steering pump is. The only things nearby are going to be the oil filter (kinda behind it) and the exhaust manifold (kinda above it). You can change the oil filter but chances are you're gonna have to jack up the car up to get to it anyway (ie. you could have changed it just as easily with the power steering pump in).

Best bloke to speak to about this, broke_as_****. he's the man when it comes to any "while you're there" jobs.

Eek! Degreaser in a device that turns around and around and around... It might have grease on the outside, but chances are its also got some on the inside which needs to stay put! I'd get a cloth and use that to get any outside grease off. If you really wanted something to do while the psp is off, you could always take the whole alternator apart and clean it out.
