Transmission problem

Hello all! I have a 98 Grand Prix Gt 3.8L 91,000 miles, the tranny has been slipping, mostly in drive, reverse works good, 3 and 2 have slippage ,On the highway I had it in drive but the rpm was at 3 grand, kinda like the trans was stuck in 3 and would not go into drive, please any help. UPDATE!! jst got back from the transmission place,They tried to hook it up to a scanner, and now there telling me that they cant communicate with my transmision,(that I have a electrical problem) this is really starting to PISS ME OFF! Any suggestions on why this is?At least the guy at the tranny place said he would hate to put in a rebuilt tranny ,to find out that it was an electrical problem, this car is getting expensive to maintain, any suggestions on whats going on?

Re: Transmission problem

If the trans is slipping that bad you may want to take a trip to the nearest tranny shop. Check the fluid to see if it is in the normal range. If it is low then add the proper fluid to the trans. this may cure the problem entirely. If that doesn't cure the problem have it checked out. I just spent $2400 for a complete rebuild on my GTP. Trans was totally shot and it gave no warning before it went.

Re: Transmission problem

I would try a different shop or a dealer to see what was going on. Someone should be able to give you an indication of what the problem is. If you don't know where to start it is impossible to try to fix the problem. If the transmission shop you went to said you have an electrical problem they should have been able to tell you if it was for the transmission or somewhere else in the system. I don't know which shop you tried but I have had AAMCO do two tranny's for me and found them to be very reputable and easy to deal with. If this is where you went then try an independent. Good Luck!

I was going to go to aamco, but thought they would charge alot, but they have a huge chain, which leads me to believe they know what there doing,I will try a 2nd opinion and go there, the car is still drivable for now,but I could be stranded anytime, ever since I hit about 90,00 miles all hell broke loose, brake problems, clunking in the rear, exhaust, actually I have had 3 brake jobs from 3 different places in the last 2 years,as soon as I get this in good condition,It is sold!!

Always buy new, and sell after warranty is up!!

Re: Transmission problem

Let me know what you actually determine the problem to be with the transmission. Also what were the brake problems you experienced?
