88 F150 302 hard to start when cold?

The engine starts and runs good when it is warmed up, but after it sits for 30 minutes or overnight, it takes it a minute or so and a few starts before it will run. It is like the engine's fuel injectors are not giving it enough fuel to run. Is this an ecu problem or some other sensor that can be changed out fairly easily. and what part or parts do I ask for at the parts counter?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

It's just an old truck that doesn't like the cold. Something that should help is tapping the gas pedal before you turn the key over, and feed it a little gas while cranking it.

My old car requires this to start in cold weather, same issue if i don't do this with the car.

Tapping the gas pedal works on carburetors but not on fuel injection, carbs have accelartor pumps fuel injection doesn't.

the fuel pump has a mechanical float and that could be stuck. gas leaks back down into the tank.
a fuel pressure gauge would tell if there is a leak down.

Re: 88 F150 302 hard to start when cold?

check the fuel pressure. Could be low, is your gas milage down also? Try a new pump and filter is your fuel pressure is low. Autozone and most places will lend you a fuel pressure gauge. hook it up and turn on the key and see if it jumps right up to where is should be, if it doesn't, first try a new regulator and filter then pump if it still does it. if your fuel pressure comes right up and is fine, do a compression test, if you have low compression, the minute of cranking when cold would build up enough fuel in the cylenders to start, and when its warm the rings are already expanded so you have good compression.

That is the case in most instances, but i've found i had to do this with 1 year old Explorers and such when they'd been sitting overnight to get them to go.

They weren't low on fuel when i had to do this....you're right, but i've found it to work...just my experience.
