Vortec and LT-1

I posted this question on the Tahoe forum and didn't get any replies. So I'll try here. My 1999 Police Tahoe engine has gone south, with 156K I have no complaints. My question is, I have a 1995 Caprice PD wagon with the LT-1 engine, can I take the long block and use it with the Votec intake manifold, or transfer the wiring for the LT-1 into the Tahoe. Now before I get all the complaints that I shouldn't break up the Caprice, the cost of a Votec long block vs my cost for the wagon makes the engine swap worth it. Also I'll move the trans over too, the car has only 80K on it.

Re: Vortec and LT-1

No you cannot use it. The LT1 uses reverse flow cooling. The Vortec did not. The heads will not interchange and I must assume as a result neither will the intakes.

OK,what about the short block? Or any other chevy engine blocks, 5.7 or 5.0. non-Vortec, say from a late 80's to early 90's

Re: Vortec and LT-1

Is your Tahoe a Vortec 350? L31 I think is the RPO. If so any of the GM crate engines with Vortec head would be a potential good swap. I'd shop around for a rebuild or even a new crate version of the L31 first though.

The Tahoe is a Police 5.7l model, it definitely has the Vortec engine. I am not up to speed on GM products or engines, but I do have access to a few short block 5.0 or 5.7 engines. If the short block is the same as say a late 80's or early 90's short block, I would consider the short block option. The costs for rebuilding the short or long block Vortec is not within my financial reach right now, thats why I considered using the LT-1 from the Police wagon.
Now talking about reverse flow on the LT-1, I assume what it is meant is the coolant system. If the short blocks are the same, is moving the water pump over, from the Vortec an option. Again please understand that most of my Police car rebuilding, has been up to this point Chrysler 440,400,383,360,318 engine series and the Ford 5.0,5.8 and 4.6l engines, I really don't know much about the late model GM line.

Bump

I am bumping the question up, so maybe someone could tell me what is differrent between the Votec and LT1 iron short block. I am at a point of breaking up the wagon with the LT1 since my engine rebuilder says the short blocks are the same.

Re: Vortec and LT-1

The internals of the short-block might be. But I doubt the blocks are the same because of the reverse flow cooling. Go to www.mortec.com they have a pretty complete casting number setup that may help. A call to a knowledgeable GM parts guy would help as well.

GMMerlin - how about you? Are they the same blocks???
