spongy brake pedal
when i depress my brake pedal for braking, the pedal keeps going down and it feels kind of like a sponge. could this be caused to air in my brake lines? is there anyway to bleed the air out of my lines without bleeding all of my brake fluid?

Re: spongy brake pedal
Yes it does sound like you have air in your lines. Have you checked your master cylinder to be sure it is full of fluid? You dont have to bleed out ALL of your brake fluid. But you do need to bleed it. Make sure the bleeder screw is closed, then pump your pedal and hold it. Get someone to help you by opening the bleeder screw just a little and then closing it back. Your pedal may fall to the floor when you start getting the air out of your lines but it should pump back up. Repeat this process until you have solid fluid (no air) coming out of the bleeder screw. But be sure to keep an eye on your master cylinder because as you pump air and fluid out of your lines the fluid level in the master cylinder will decrease.
If this doesnt fix your problem and you dont have any obvious leaks at the wheel cylinders or calipers then you may be in for a new master cylinder. Fluid may be leaking back into the vacuum area of the master cylinder. Best of luck to ya. |
