Hi
I am trying to remove the timing belt on my 93 1.9L escort hatchback. I understand that I need to remove the crankshaft pulley and for immobilizing the crankshaft, I need to locate the fly wheel and prevent it from turning. I don't know how to locate the flywheel. Can anyone please advice? |

Re: where is the fly wheel on 93 1.9L escort?
The flywheel is located on the opposite end of the engine. It connected to the crank and if you have an automatic transmission the torque convertor is connected to it. If you have a manual the clutch is attached. To get to the flywheel, raise the car and remove the dust cover from the bottom of the bell housing (front of the transmission). It usually comes of with a couple of bolts. The flywheel is the thing with all the teeth on it. Use a block of wood or a screwdriver to hold it in place while someone removes the pulley. Good Luck!

I just wanted to clarify: mine is a manual transmission. What I see at the opposite end of crank shaft end of the egine is a black metal cover with at least 8 bolts. When I removed 3 of them, oil started dripping. So I am not sure if I am removing the right part. I don't see any other component which I can remove with two bolts. I am not sure if I am doing the right thing to remove the timing belt. Do I really have to remove tranmission cover just to remove timing belt or am i doing something wrong? |

With a manual trans, you can put the wheels on the ground, tranny in gear, and that holds the motor from turning. You can get a socket on the pulley with an 18" extension if the wheels are turned all the way.
Should not have oil dripping, maybe need a new seal, but I wouldn't bother unless it's been using too much. |

I just finished changing my timing belt...parked the right side up on the curb and put the car in gear, all set to go.

Change the water pump while you're in there, and maybe the front main engine oil seal if there's any trace of oil.

in fact, i removed the timing belt to replace the water pump.
however, i am not sure about the oil seal. is this the oil seal on the crank shaft on which the crank shaft pulley is attached? |

Re: where is the fly wheel on 93 1.9L escort?
Yes, where the crankshaft goes through the block. On mine, there was a small thin springy disc that I had to remove to get to the seal itself, Haynes seemed to have ignored it. Had to bend a tiny screwdiver at a right angle almost to pry it off, got real distorted, but a few whacks with a hammer on a wood block straightened it out again.
So if you're changing the water pump, then you want to change the timing belt too, they're supposed to be changed at 50000 miles, and frequently fail. After all the work of getting it off in the first place, how would you feel if it started slipping in a couple months and you had to do it over? |
