95 Jetta Tranny Q's

Greetings,
I live in Santa Monica, CA and I'm pretty sure the transmission is slipping enough to cause some horrible mileage and some noticiable power problem on the Hwy.
The previous owner has a 'rocket shifter' replaced instead of the factory grip shifter in the counsel. I beleive with this rapid shifting and constant grinding/ downshifting, the poor car has just been run into the ground.

Anyway, I'm looking for a good shop/ mechanic in the area and if anyone would have any suggestion as to how much a tranny overhaul would be, please let me know.

Also, it sounds as if the heat shield on the Catalytic converter is ratteling, but I can't find the rattle as it seems to be coming from inside. Is this also a needing a replacement?

Finally, it's missing a cosmetic front bumper turn signal light. and the auto locks are now crapped out. I'd rather give a solid mechanic the $ and not a garage to get this fixed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
