FP Big 28

Hey Fellas, I'm looking to upgrade my turbo once I finish rebuilding my block. I want a turbo that makes a decent amount of power but spool up time is more my concern. I've read about the Forced Performance Big 28 and that's kind of what I'm leaning too right now. I'm also considering Buschur's BR580. Any thoughts/opinions on the subject? Kevin?

I'm confused A t28 is good for maybe 300 whp, while the BR580 will do well over 500. Those are two very different turbos! What are you looking at for spool up? How much power do you need? Whats the car going to be used for?

T28s are famous for their quick spool time. FP Big 28 is often compared to 16g's for power potential, but many prefer the Evo III. Look at some DSMtimes.org 1320s and then make your decision. It is impressive to see how fast you can run on a well tuned 16g.

I guess that I'm kind of off track... I'm sure that I read that the FP Big 28 was rated between 400 and 500 hp, either that was bs or I'm getting too old. In either case, I wanting to building an autox/street car. Something without a ton of lag but still in the 450/500 hp area. Thanks.

You are asking quite a bit. There are a lot of autox cars running 16g level turbos, and some of the bigger ones with ball bearing turbos like the SBR GT10, which is at about the same level as a 20g. 500hp and no lag isn't as easy as choosing a turbo.

450-500hp are pretty serious drag numbers. Expect a lot of lag here, my guess, around 4000rpm+ spool. Also depends A LOT on your other mods, like head, mas, manifolds, exhaust, cams...

If you are serious about jumping in with the higher powered autox DSMs, www.slowboyracing.com GT10-GT14 are ball bearing garrett turbos, where a 10 or 11 might be closer to reality, check it out.

t28s are a lot smaller than 450-500 whp, thats for sure! But best case scenario I cant think of from first hand experience is the tdo6H 20g I ran. Good for ~450 whp, and 25 psi all in by 3700 rpm. Not going to get much better than that. Most 500whp turbos get full boost between 3800 and 4400 rpm. Some consider that laggy for autox, but I know some poeple that have succesfully autoxed with 20Gs. I think a GT12 would be in the 500 whp ballpark at 55 lbs/min, 25 psi by about 4200 rpm would be my guess. A friends GT14 comes in around 4500. My 56 trim (GT14 wheel, 65 lbs/min) in a TDO6H variety (for sale) had 25 psi by 4400 rpm. A 63/stage 3/50 trim would come in around 4000 rpm, and is rated to 50 lbs/min, or about 450+ whp.

Its a tough choice, but the examples above should get you pointed in the right direction. If lag is really important, I think the tdo6h 20g might be the way to go at only $999 and 25 psi by 3700 rpm I suppose... That or the 50 trim or GT12 are your best bets.
