Unhappy Stalling 1991 Eighty-Eight

I bought my car from a little old lady in Houston. It had 25,000 original miles on it. Because it sat for so long, I had to replace a few things: water pump, serpentine belt, breaks, tires, and unfortunately the computer. Since that time, it's been pretty good to me. The car now has 48K miles...and of course, it's acting up.

Shortly after starting it, it stalls. It starts right back up, but will then stall a few more times. Sometimes, it runs just fine after that. Sometimes, it stalls while I'm driving. Not fun! I took it to my mechanic who though it might be a sensor. He replaced it, and it seemed to work fine. 2 days later, same thing, but worse. I took it back and he said he fixed it. He didn't charge me, but he also wouldn't say what was wrong. The next day, the damn thing stalled while I was doing about 45mpr. I managed to get it back to the mechanic, who eventually discovered that I didn't have an air filter!!

About 6K miles ago, I made the mistake of taking my car to Jiffy Lube for an oil change. I bet you know where this is going. They suggested a new air filter and I agreed. Well, Jerky lube took the old filter, but the morons never put a new in! When we figured this all out, my fiance went to JL and had a chat with the manager. They flushed the engine and frankly, I haven't driven it since. I'm too darn scared that they really screwed the car up.

Would not having the filter cause it to stall like that? Could not having the filter damaged my car beyod hope? Could it be something else? My bass player, who is a old car buff, said it sounded electrical to him. (He was with me in the car when it stalled a few times.)

Thanks everyone!

Re: Stalling 1991 Eighty-Eight

hmmm...sounds more like a bad sensor. What sensor did your mechanic change? My guess would the crankshaft position sensor or camshaft position sensor. My 92 Lesabre and 90 Olds 88 did the same things. Nothing like going down the hwy when the car shuts off and doesn't want to start up again.

I don't think the air filter would cause the car to stop running. Do you know if your computer stored any trouble codes?

I'm not sure what he swapped out. I'll have to check. The computer stores codes, but when I went to AutoZone, they wuoldn't help me with the diagnostic.
