'04 quad cab 4x4

i am new to the 4x4 world. i would like to get a bit more clearance out of my truck, but am wondering what is the best way...torsion bar, suspension lift, etc? i don't want to lift it to the moon, just for performance purpose. also, does anyone recommend computer chips, cat back systems, etc. to boost ponies? thanks.
