Coolant change for 2000 windstar

Is there an easy way to change engine coolant. I want to flush the system; any advise.

What are your thoughts on changing to Dexcool?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Re: Coolant change for 2000 windstar

Hi
I recently had my coolant replaced at a quick lube type of place. I believe it was $39. Now normally I would cringe at the idea of paying for labor that I can provide. However, in this case I found it well worth it. They use a vacuum system to suck out the old, and then refill the evacuated system. That prevents air from building up in the system so that it is full from the start.
Now this process doesn't truly flush the system in the way that we once did with older cars, and I can't really speak to the necessity of that with today's vehicles. I can simply say this was by far the most simple fluid change I have ever done.
As to your dexcool question: I would not put in anything that Ford did not suggest. I believe dexcool is GM's 1000000 mile coolant, and some with GM vehicles advocate changing to conventional coolant immediately - there is conjecture that the dexcool eats head gaskets.
My 96's cooling system has been flawless for 117000 miles and counting. I have symply kept the coolant level where it belongs and have had the coolant changed out twice since I purchased the van at 40000.

I have recently flushed my cooling system due to coolant contamination and it was very easy. I doubt you could get the coolant flushed for $39 as there is a fair amount of coolant in the system and it does take a bit of time. Go to the link below and follow the instructions and you will be fine...

I change the coolant on my 2000 this past spring. Just remove the bottom radiator hose for the draining. I replaced it and removed it several times as I just flushed clean tap water through the system. I would not use Dexcool but only a high quality ethelyne glycol coolant (the green stuff) in a 50/50 solution with water. If you do this every two years there is really no need for a professional reverse flush as the system stays really clean and clear. Just make sure you keep a good look at the level after you refill through 3-4 heat and cool down cycles.

I too would not recommend Dexcool. I had considered it until I discovered all of the problems with GM vehicles that use it. We also have a 99 Venture that uses Dexcool and we had gasket troubles (luckily while under warranty).

I changed my coolant on my 99 Windstar by using the lower rad hose. This method drains about 8 of the 15 - 16 litres. I plan to do this again in a month or so and thus 75% will have been changed. I will then do this annually.
