Clutched replaced, reverse now grinding, can't get into gears!

Hi folks. I just had my clutch replaced in my 89 CRX DX. Now, I ca't seem to get the car into 1st gear without "forcing" it. The car also severely grinds when you try to put it into reverse. After getting the car going, it shifts into 2nd but it's hard to get it there, third is a little easier, 4th is hard to get into, finaly 5th is easy to get into. What is going on with my daily driver and can it be fixed?

Troy

Did you take the frist couple thousand miles easy? When you replace a clutch you shouldn't be hard on it for like 3,000 miles.

Re: Clutched replaced, reverse now grinding, can't get into gears!

You guy need to adjust your tranny cable out more. thats all that is wrong. Ok Ill kinda explain. It the cluch disk is too close to the flywheel it will try to spin the tranny if your in neutral then it is spinning everything inside but not in gear. Then you try to put it in gear the shaft is spinning inside the tranny and it has to slow down so you can put it in gear. Thats your first gear problem. As far a reverse goes there are no syncros in reverse so nothing to try and slow the speed on the main shaft to engage so it grinds. So just adjust your cable out about 2-3 turns and you will not have this problem anymore.

Oh forgot also if you messed up the pilot bearing like not putting a little grease on it when it went back in, then this could also effect it but not likey cause you guys know better than to put a dry pilot bearing in right?

this is also true !! basically adjust it till you can engage all gears smoothly while the engine is running. I guess if thats not your problem, then your pilot bearing could be dried & fried!

That same thing happened to me, when I first got my car I had to replace the clutch and when I was done and went to take it for a test drive it wouldnt shift into gear (i was bummed) so I just backed the adjuster off a few turns and it ran great.

Re: Clutched replaced, reverse now grinding, can't get into gears!

Thanks folks. You are describing my problem perfectly. I will adjust the clutch cable and hope for the best. My local shop did the work so I'll have to ask them about the pilot bearing. My mechanic replaced the tranny oil so, I don't think that could be the problem. I'll let you know how it turns out.... I sure do misss my REX. Been 5 days without......

im 99% sure your clutch cable is too loose. adjust it for ~5mm play in the pedal.

Re: Clutched replaced, reverse now grinding, can't get into gears!

I just talked to my shop and my mechanic says the tranny oil is full and that he lubed the pilot bearing before repacing it. I'll metion the 5mm of play on the cable adjustment. Hoping to get my Rex back soon. Driving my Tacoma Double cab is getting pricely gas wise.

Hahaha... that is not necessary nor have anything to do with it. The cable probably just needed adjusting...

The shop that replaced my clutch (did my tranny 2k miles later) said I needed at least an inch of play in my clutch pedal (note: they work only on hondas... called "especially honda" ;-) and I thought they were totally high or something. It just felt weird... so I just turned the clutch cable adjuster a couple of notches and voila... perfect!

just my
