Maf??

Trying to mod a 2.8/ a4 and lately i have been confused with what a MAF is. I hear that it was a senso and that it may help from to much air being intaked and possibly making the engine warp and the make the heads have problems if this is what it does i will defantly buy one.

Re: Maf??

Your car already comes with a MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. There is no need to put in an aftermarket one because you won't get any added performance.

What it does is it tells the car's engine computer how much air is flowing into the engine. That way, the car can adjust the air flow and also fuel injectors to make the optimal mixture to burn.

If your MAF is on its way out, it could just be that it's dirty. There are many ways to clean them, but you have to be very careful, and I personally wouldn't recommend doing it unless you're sure its still good underneath the dust. You also run the risk of breaking the MAF's little sensor parts when you clean it.

The only reason I recommend cleaning it over replacing it SOMETIMES is because they're so dang expensive.

If you have a stock air box and haven't driven in really dusty conditions and have had the air filter replaced regularly, then your MAF should be good for 100,000 miles or more.

Generally if your MAF is bad, it's pretty easy to notice. You will notice that your car is making funny smells when you drive, almost like mild rotten eggs (running rich) or you will notice a loss of power (running lean). Neither one is very good, and both will result in any combination of the following: worse MPG, erratic idle, loss of power, etc.

If you think you need a new MAF, have somebody with a VAG-COM check it out for you, or take it to a shop (make sure it is one you trust though) and either way, they will be able to tell you.

Be sure to post what you end up doing!

Re: Maf??

Sorry, I don't know what you would do with the MAF if you were going to put in a new air intake system or something like that. In all of my experience there has never really been any need to upgrade the stock audi airbox, they are very free breathing stock.

I am sure someone on here will be able to help you out with your specific question though.

Re: Maf??

i got an air intake from lltek.com and didnt have to replace anything. The MAF hooks right up to the aftermarket unit and everything works perfect. contact lltek if you have anyother questions, they are really helpful. the 96 2.8 doesn't get much extra power form the intake but it gives a better sound. hope this helps
