just boght my 98se, the guy i bought it from says it's equipped w/abs but none of the lights go on on the dash. nissan wants to charge me 70 to find out. how do you really tell? there is a slot in the fuse box with a fuse in it but i don't know for sure if that's a good indicator. i was also told there should be 4 lines coming out from the brake master cylinder, but i want to confirm this first. thanks for any help.

You could check the brake caliper. Or you could just go to an isolated area, no cops. Floor it and when you are at a high speed, like 70-80, slam on the brakes and see if they lock. If you feel a hard vibration on the pedal like it goes up and down very quick, you have abs!
Please be careful if you actually do my second suggestion.

well, i already did that at 40mph and it skidded. i'm mainly concerned that if i did have it and it's not working, i want to fix it but i don't want to go to the dealership and have them charge me 70 bucks just to tell me "no, you don't have it". what am i looking for on the caliper? i see a brake hose, but nothing else. would there be a extra cable or wire for the sensor? thanks for the quick reply also.

Try # 2 . . . !!!!!
Really, that would be cool! Or, you could check the master cylinder . . . look for the four small metal lines (about 1/4" in diameter if I remember correctly) . . . or you could look, I believe in the passenger side of the engine bay for another set of identical lines coming out of what should be an ABS thingy . . . I'm not making much sense, but if you look in the engine bay and you can figure out what I'm talking about . . . Then you have ABS! |

It should say somewhere, the letters "abs". Not so sure on a Max, but on my Accord, it has ABS engraved on the caliper. I would assume if you have the light on the dash, that you would have it. But, maybe you can go some local mechanic, a friend, and have them look for you. Sorry for not being much help in this one.

first check onder hood for ABS fuse in the fuse box.....if no, no ABS, if yes try 20~30miles....trun (fast) and brake (bottom out the brake)...if ur max turns and brake pedal pumps, ur fine.....if ur car slides strait ur ABS might be screwed....might be the fuse, might be the pumb....!!...but i think ur car is equipped with ABS...i dunno...good luck..^^

went to nissan service dept. today. service rep didn't feel like pulling up the vin cause he says all 98 se's were equipped with abs. then they went on to say if i had disc brakes, that was another indicator. ultimately they were both wrong since another se on the lot identical to mine didn't have it either. oh well, abs can be a headache sometimes, and i don't have a problem with the way my 98 brakes anyways. they also didn't charge me 70 dollars although no real mechanic looked at it. for some reason i think they weren't working there too long.
