advice pls - 4runner clutch problem?

i have a 98 4runner 4x4, manual. last week, the clutch cable (to the slave cylinder, i *think*) was replaced. i just drove 700 mls last night. this afternoon, i turned on the car and was unable to shift into 1st gear. 2nd worked but difficult; 3rd didn't, 4th difficult. began driving in 2nd. after a few hundred yards, car began shifting alright. parked it for 3 hours. got back in - same story. very hard shifting. any suggestions? couldn't see a leak but perhaps the cable again?
also - anyone know a good mechanic in san diego (which is where i'm stuck right now!) thanks!

I don't think there is a cable, but I think it's a piston that goes into the slave cyclinder. Sounds like it has to bleed, just like brakes.

Have someone watch the clutch pedal bracket while you operate the clutch. Sometimes the bracket can develop a crack and flex. If that's the problem, the bracket is easily replaced. You can do it yourself.

It's Brake fluid, get any brake fluid with DOT 3 or 4 spec's
Here's the best:
http://www.bakerprecision.com/neobrk.htm
BUT you will have to drain the ENTIRE system of the old stuff.
