Over heating while towing

I just bought 24 ft. Travel trailer when I was towing it home with my
2002 TB I seem to have some problem with the engine heating up quiet
a bit more than normal (it went as high as 235-240 degrees) I pulled
over at this point so I dont know if it would have went any higher. My
TB is a EXT with Long 6 cyl. and 3:43 rear end, trailer weights just under
4,000 lbs. unloaded which is about 1,000 Lbs under my tow cap.Does
anyone have some input on this because its nearly made sick
I didnt expect to have this problem........ THANKS

Is it overheating or just getting hotter? Most new cooling systems can tolerate heat past the boiling point if the coolant is the correct mixture of antifreeze and water. Part of the emissions control is to have engines run hotter so as to be more efficient. Obviously pulling a trailer such as yours will make the entire system work harder, especially the transmission which is cooled by the radiator also. I would suggest aan additional trans cooler to help take some of the load off the cooling system. Your trans will thank you for it.

Re: Over heating while towing

I just towed my Z28 to NYC with my TB with no probs. Gauge barely went past halfway, and outside temp was in the upper 80's to mid 90's throughout the trip. The Z28 weighs about 3500 pounds in the trim it was on the trailer in, and the trailer is a very large Car trailer with a diamond plate steel bed. It probably weighs close to 1500 pounds by itself, so I would say my load was close to 5000 pounds. Gas mileage was near 13mpg average while pulling the trailer and car.
