Post Defective battery causes problems

97 grand am se 2.4 auto w/air. The brand new battery, that the dealership installed just before I baught the car, failed at the ground post just inside the case. This caused the entire electrical system to experience rapid spikes while trying to start the engine. As any good tech knows, this is not good for the ECM or any other components, for that matter.
As a result, the ETS indicator and the check engine light remain lit after engine starup.
So, c'mon all you ASE techs out there; What are the three likely causes, and fixes for this problem??
