Indicator light shows tranny already in drive

Hey folks! I don't know much about cars so please forgive my ignorance. My Grand Am died on me twice when stopping at a stoplight. From reading some of the posts, I'm wondering if it might be the problem with the TCC that has been spoken about. However, after the second time this occured, the gear indicator light is stuck in drive regardless of what gear it is actually in. The engine will not turn, I assume because it thinks it is in drive. How can I fix this? Thanks for any suggestions.

I would say it sounds like your park neutral switch is defective. It is mounted on top of the transmission, and can be easily replaced. Also it could be the switch that is in the console for the shifter. Unplug one at a time, and hook back up to see if this clears the problem .Don't remove park neutral switch unless you have a new one, or now how to line up the old one back. Just remove connector, and put back on.

Let me know how you make out...........
