1.1 Fiesta engine

Hi all.
Had a problem with my fiesta 1.1LX 1990 today engine not pulling spluttering etc. Knowing absolutely Jack S*** about cars had to call out Mobile mechanic, he checked oil level and said it was empty ooppps, He topped it up and said it was a good job the engine had a type of protection system on it, car now runs fine and quite a bit quieter. After getting over my embarrassment I asked my dad if he knew about this system, he said he didn’t think they had that on 1990 fiestas can anyone here enlighten me please?
