308 gts water pump belt

I have a 84 308 qv gts euro model that is burnig the water pump belt off. I have put 4 belts on it and none of them have lasted more than 20 miles. Ive replaced the water pump and checked the alternator so all of that is fine. Previously it ran perfectly and all of the sudden this problem occured for no obvious reason. If anybody has any suggestions to what the problem may be please help me out.

It has been almost 20 years since I last wrenched on a 308 so, If I recall correctly, the water pump/alt belt is a thin belt apx 5mm wide. If so it has to be very tight due to lack of surface area. Just to verify a few things make sure that the angle of "V" of the belt matches the angle of the "V" of the pulleys and that it does not bottom out on the pulleys. If possible, verify that the alternator is not the cause by disconnecting the electrical portion (to remove the load) and run it around. tape up the lead so that you don't short something out.
