jetta stuck in third gear

Hi I am new here and hoping some one can help me and my girlfriend. Her 87 jetta which she just purchased a couple of months ago is now stuck in third gear. The clutch seems to be working as i can start it with it depressed. Not sure were to start? Could it be in the linkage or is it a transmission problem? Could really use any advice as funds are rather short at this time. Thanks for any help you can give me in advance it is much appreciated.

Re: jetta stuck in third gear

BlueCruiser Thank you very much for the suggestion. You were on the right track. Only it was the plastic part on one of the shifting arms under the hood. $3.64 for the part and i installed it myself and saved probably hundreds of dollars. Thank you very much. just a note if it happens to someone else it was still stuck in gear after i installed the rod so i took it out on the road and worked it with a little force and it released and is working just fine now. Again thanks
