Re: IS300 Turbo or Super Charger?

I'd say Turbo all the way for this car, from what I've seen and read the really fast forced induction IS300s all seem to have something in common, they have Turbos. Supercharged ones just don't seem to lay down the same type of numbers as the Turbo ones.

Ya i know the turbo makes it a bit faster, but im talking about which one is better since i know the Turbo forces the engine and stresses it out. So would a supercharger be a bit better for the engine not to suffer as much?

Re: IS300 Turbo or Super Charger?

well if you get a supercharger.. there would be a really good boost and consistant power.. i think most superchargers dont put insane amount of boost because its the same all the time.. as for the turbo.. well.. u gotta wait for the boost to come in.. and i think the engine should be able to take it.. but the powerband would only just when the turbo kicks in.. when it doesn't.. its just a normal IS heh

NO...superchargers do not put the same boost all the time, they are RPM dependent

on the other hand turbos are load dependent giving the car an adjustable powerband...and that is a very good thing

lets say you are towing something uphill and you are cruising at 2000 RPM, the turbo is already giving you full boost while the supercharger gives you almost nothing since the RPM is too low and your engine is left on its own.

the turbo will not stress the engine anymore than a super unless it will push more air in. if anything it will stress the engine less since it will not run off the crankshaft

BTW he is an excellent comparison between a super and a turbo:

read the third post:

However if you would like a simple install/tuning the superchargers are much less complicated.

If you wanna do some racing, go with a turbocharger - it's much more efficient at making power. If you just want a little more kick out of your car, go with a supercharger - it'll be easier to install, it'll be less stressful on the engine, and it'll give you a nice, smooth powerband.

So how would an IS with about 33K miles handle a turbo? Would it break alot? Thanks.

depends on how much power you want to make and how many modifications you will allow.

Also it will depend on your driving style, basically if you'll be constantly under boost or not.

Well, i drag race a little bit. Im trying to make the IS300 go from strock to 320-340HP which i read is what a Turbo Kit can add from stock. My plan is to go from 0-60 in about 5.4-5.5. Enough to beat a Mustang GT i guess. I wouldnt force it much, i drag race about twice a day.

Toyota motors are very reliable. A 33K IS 300 motor, if properly taken care of, can handle turbocharging easily.

Turbos- ***primarily for long distance races where it has time to kick in while you still have a chance of winning***

PROS- Economy friendly as it turns exhaust into fumes turning waste to a hell of alot of power, its also upgradeable in terms of stage 1,2,3,4. If youre looking for more power, turbos are the way to go.

CONS- HEAT, the turbine houseing creates alot of heat because it uses exhaust fumes as a source of power. TURBO LAG!!!!! the bigger the turbo, the worse the lag, this can be avoided by getting lighter turbine blades or getting smaller turbos.

Supercharger- ***for short distance racing, like 1/4 miles, u get instant power instead of waiting for the turbo turbines to spool up because as oposed to exhaust, SC's draw power from belts and pulleys***

PROS- Instant power and lest heat exhertion from the unit, it creates a constant level of boost.

CONS- Not very versitle in terms of upgrades.
