Exclamation 1991 Riviera Problems

I have a 91 Buick RIviera that has been giving me a lot of problems. I recently had it put in the shop for a new water pump and all new hoses. It continues to get hot, but not into the red zone on the guage. A few months later the crank shaft balancer broke and I had to replace that. The main problem with it is that every once in a while, it just wont start. When I turn the key nothing happens. All the dash and electronics will come on and the battery light has always shown good. This is starting to become a real problem. When this happens it will start up as normal about 10 to 15 minutes later. Happens at various times, sometimes after ithasnt been drove for a day, sometimes after I have driven a while. I took it to the mechanic and he said he could find nothing wrong with it. I figured it was the starter or cylinoid. Any advice or similar problems??

Re: 1991 Riviera Problems

The First thing to check is make sure your battery cables are tight and clean a wire brush does a good job use the brush to clean battery post and the cables themself's trust me this works I have had the same problem on a different car
Next thing that it could be is the cylinoid Clean the battery frist and let me know how it works out for you ...

have had this problem

I own a 1990 riviera and i have had the same problem. First i ask if you have one of the ignition keys with the black bullet built into the key, i assume that you do. The problem is likely the VATS system (vehicle anti-theft system). It has a time out window of about 8-10 minutes. hot or cold doesn't matter, it reads the resistance through the pellet in your key to recognize that the key is not a forgery, then it tells your car it can start. Often the cause of the problem is the wires that run to the ingitoin switch through the steering column and attach to the back of the ingnition lock cylinder. they are two little white wires and they like to break, b/c they twist every time you turn your key on, eventually they just break off or get thin when a few strands break, then they don't read the resistance right ant the VATS controller won't let your car start. or it could be the key pellet is dirty or something, probably not though. so if you want, have your mechanic try looking into that system.
