wiper problems

I am rebuilding a 1987 XJ 4.0L and a very interesting problem has developed. When I select the wipers, they move at a slow speed. When I speed up, the wipers increase speed! It doesn't matter what speed I have the wipers selected at. It does it at all selections. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Only thing i've come up with is that you have an intermitent wiper module..

may be something to do with the connections to it or the module its self.

Is it vehicle speed that affects it or just engine speed??

When engine speed increases the wipers increase. They move really slow when the engine is at idle. This happens on all selections on the switch.

Re: wiper problems

you should check

1.. battery voltage with engine off (should be atleast 12.6v if not charge it up ..and load test it.

2. check voltage at the battery with engine running at idle and as engine is reved up. should be approx. 13.8-14.4v.

3. With wipers running, connect volt meter between battery negative and body of the wiper motor. use the 12 volt scale. if the reading is more than 0.100v, your wiper motor is not grounding effectivly.

you can do a quick check without a volt meter by using a jumper cable from the battery negative to the wiper motor body and see if that makes a difference.

This is what I've thought of so far.

let us know what you find.

Ok, I found a completely deteriated bonding jumper from the motor to the body. I replaced it and the speeding up has gone away. Now the wiper will only operate in one mode through out the switch positions and when shut off the wipes do not return to the parked position. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks
