engine swap

new to this forum. bit of a honda person and the toyota has been making it's way to being one of my favourites, especially the MR2. my question is about an engine transplant, and whether or not it is possible to swap a 3SGTE from a 90'-93 MR2 into a 86 or 87 MR2. does it require custom motor mounts or is it a straight swap. past that are there any other engines recomended that are either easier to swap in or are more powerful, any input or information on this swap would be helpful. thanks

im not that knowledgeable of the mk1 but i know that it isnt a direct swap... it think it does need custom motor mounts but it is possible... i know that someone in this forum did it or is currently doing it, and can probibly give you more information as for the difficulty and money that is required for it

Re: engine swap

its very possible many people have done it it's not that easy, not as easy as you think taking one engine from an mr2 and putting it in another. Its comonly reffered to as the mk1.5 as far as I know less than a dosen people have actually done this swap and posted it online. But its worth it the swap alone will have you running 0-60 in about 4.5 seconds, not bad for 200 horses. Another good swap to consider is finding a 20v 4age and putting that in which is really nice if you can afford someone to custom build a turbocharger or supercharger.

update on 0-60: passenger can't click the stopwatch, too busy holding on

i agree, a 20v is a good swap as well, but you still have wiring to deal with. though, wiring is much easier on its own.

Re: engine swap

interesting, suppose this is my first swap (which it is) would it be best to go with the 20 valve because of less wiring, and later upgrade to a turbo/super charger. plus... how well do the tranny and engine match, is there anything going on there i should be aware of like further fabrication or drilling.

Re: engine swap

I think the 20v is a little easier, and the tranny should match, but it's not the best one, I cant remember, but I think the best one is the tranny thats on the 20v

Re: engine swap

the 20v will be easier, not because of wiring (you'll still have a lot) but because you don't have to cut, weld and clearance anything. there was a red one on ebay a couple months ago... so it is possible to do.

Re: engine swap

cool... about the mr2 mk1.5 project, ive been looking at that thread and i saw that you had two sets of motor mounts going, the ones that you cut and then just below it there were some red ones, what are those all about.

Re: engine swap

the ones we cut are the side mounted ones (welded to the car) they were painted w/ the engine bay, and the red ones were some that we modified to take a solid mountable bushing. they are front and rear.
