just for the record this post WAS 2 months old but anyway the difference is d4 is "overdrive" think of it as either leaving a manual in third or shifting to fourth...this should be apparent just by driving the car

Re: auto transmission question?

FYI, I was told that the Honda AT is, in effect, a 4-speed transmission, with technology to make it automatic.

So, that means that D3 is 3rd, and D4 is 4th (direct drive), not overdrive. No doubt with a calculator, the Haynes manual (to tell me the final drive ratio) and a trip down the road paying attention to the tach and speedo would confirm this. But I haven't felt the need to actually go that far.

Re: auto transmission question?

If you are driving on terrian where the car is constantly shifting up and down between 3rd & 4th put in 3rd.

If it has enough torque that it is staying in 4th (level road, going on a trip, interstate highways) then use 4th. Feel the need for a bit more power up a slight hill go back down to D3 manually for a bit.

D3 = higher RPM's = more power = more gas

D4 = lower RPM = less power = better fuel economy
