1996 Mazda Protege - 135,000 miles - automatic
the car makes click noise when the radiator fan turns ON, I listened to the noise - it is actually vibration from one of the pulley ... think it might be one of the bearings, Can anyone tell me which bearing/pulley noise is cause bcoz of the radiator fan turning ON. Someone told me that radiator fan is producing load on alterator, which is loading the idler pulley....so might be one of the bearing... Please give any suggessions... |

The Idler tension pulley could be going bad, it's really easy to replace. And it is not too uncommon on a car with mileage that high. Something worth looking into. to get a better idea, take your belt off, and grab the pulley and try shaking it, if you hear clicking or it moves an 1/8" or so, then it's probably bad, though not necassarily the cause of the clicking noise. Tricky, I know, but that's how cars are.

I will check the idler pulley, one more thing I noticed is the clicking noise comes ON and OFF (I guess when fan comes ON and OFF) when driving..when click noise stops the car gets more power - (kind of when u switch off the AC when driving) -- so I'm wondering whether it is loose belt... also one of the mechanic looked and said that I could try tightening the belts...
