Movies influence beliefs?

Do you guys think that movies influence what we think is reality?

Ex. the matrix
I ran into alot of people that thought that the matrix might actually exist!

Give examples of other movies and how they might have change peoples reality.

Re: Movies influence beliefs?

No. Everyone has their own thoughts on what reality is, but movies, no. I will agree that some movies show a lot of interesting simularities of certain aspects, but reality is a question of complex levels of illusional breakdowns of perception.

Though, I did enjoy the matrix. Those who believe the movie is real, should lay off the .

Re: Movies influence beliefs?

Movies, television and the media affect the way we perceive the world, our standards, our expectations and they way we believe we should behave.

There have been literally hundreds of psychology and sociology research papers published on this subject, over the last several decades.
Generally, the media affects us, usually not in any overwhelming way, but bit by bit over time.

Re: Movies influence beliefs?

ok I voted yes not because I think people believe in certain things out of movies, but more because people watch movies with whatever in it and they decide thats how it should be and thats the cool thing... kind of like if a young kid watches a movie with cussing and he thinks the person cussing is cool because of the movie then he is likely to start cussing himself, the same can be said for a lot of things... but this is mostly with younger people and stupid older people

I agree, older people are less susceptible to suggestion. This is why most advertising is geared to younger people. Older folks are well known to be more set in their ways and more resistant to change.

Re: Movies influence beliefs?

for the most part i would say no. but like they said, younger people and stupid older people. but i believe that peoples experiences and circumstances they come across shapes their beliefs. For ex. your parents, family, and friends (and enemies) who u spend most of your time with. i played violent video games and watched violent movies throught my child hood, but i would never in my life pick up a gun to hurt someone. i would have to say just weak minded people. lol @ The Matrix, they wish

Id say the movie the Truman Show had some people looking over their shoulder and searching for mics or cameras....anyway i was at a hotel when a baseball team i was on went to little league state or whatever a few years back, and there was a plastic cover screwed to the wall above the tv with slits in it..curiosity got me and i unscrewed it and there was what appeared to be a camera...it had a wire connected to it and like a glass lens or cap at the end. what can be assumed other than the fact that we are being monitored in our own hotel rooms?

you are a paranoid person. We may be being watched, but we can't waste our lives worrying about it. This is kinda OT

Re: Movies influence beliefs?

I think that many of you are kind of missing my train of thought here. Think of life without movies, would you have a different outlook on life. I know that for me, I subconsciously(sp) believe that it is not that great being rich simply because the people in movies who are rich are not usually cast as happy people.

Re: Movies influence beliefs?

I would think that the world would be much different without hollywood and movies... not that I'm against them or anything, I love going to the Movie Theater... it's just that, with all of the different messages sent out to all of the young people (as brought up before) I definitely think that movies Subconsiously alter peoples behaviors. Some people get so obsessed over movies and Actors. I saw one show on MTV where two twin brothers (around 16 yrs old) actually had plastic surgery to alter their features just to look like Brad Pitt. How idiotic is this? Just on that example alone, I would say that movies alter peoples own Reality.

Not for me personally the don't, but i think for people they do. Individuals don't care or worry about the movies, but groups of people are greatly influenced by it.
