5.7L upgrades and downfalls

i have a 97 Z71 with a 350 and a buddy of mine raced me in a 5.9 ram w/ upgrades and beat me, CAN NOT HAVE THAT! soo i wanna get a throttle body spacer, gms intake, underdrive pullies, and electric fans. the only issuse/s is that my truck runs a lil hot, usually 200-210. buying under drive pulleis would definatly worsen that problem so i figure the electric fans would rectify that?? but then i would prolly have to have a second battery to run the fans?? any thoughts or input will be apreaciated.

try one of the new oil filter heat sinks. Just a little sleeve that goes on your filter. supposed to keep the oil alot cooler. Would be a cheap attempt and it might work for you.

What??? You lost to a dodge, A buddy of mine has a 1997 Dodge Ram club cab 4x4 with a 5.9 liter with a couple little mods. I was in my dads S-10 Z-R2 with the 4.3 ( and if anyone know about the Z-R2 they have 31 inch tires out of the showroom floor. We lined up at a stoplight and I kicked his ass off the starting line and I never saw him again. I also have a 1997 Z-71 with the 5.7 and it is so fast!!!

Re: 5.7L upgrades and downfalls

I now found out the ram has 'ram air' and a mild cam...still doesnt make it ok to get beat by but i now know the reason. i was scratchin my head cuz i piss on mustangs (srs's and a GT...once). my favortie thing to do is pull up to some lil rice burner turd and and give him a rev or two and watch them try to race me its soo pitiful.

200-210 is not hot that's normal. Your best bangs for the buck, other than a supercharger, would be aftermarket exhaust and a K&N. Don't waste your time and money on those pulleys. They work but you will be wondering why your AC and battery aren't charging well.

ok i was told by a couple different people that pullies would do more harm than good. rite now i have true dual flowmaster 40's and want to buy headers and have 2.5" piped all the way back; and a GMS intake(cuz its fully enclosed...i do a lot of muddin) and a throttle body spacer. Sound like a good plan?

Re: 5.7L upgrades and downfalls

If you are worried about your engine temp get a lower temp thermostat, a 185 or 165 will be sufficient. Only like 5 bucks at autozone, I know though if you get too low of a thermostat you will run rich but I never had a problem with my 165. A cam is the most power adding thing you can do for the price if you can do it yourself. Good luck.
