Check engine light

I have a 94 ford ranger, the check engine light has come on and sometimes it goes off. I have had an automotive parts dealer check it. It came back as a problem with one of my coils since it has two, one for the intake and one for the exhaust. It gave me a long list on how to check the coils but it does not seem to be missing and the gas mileage is the same and how come it goes off sometimes. It seems to be a heating issue. After the belt broke and the truck got a little hot it came on but them went off. Does any one know what this problem might be and how can I fix it besides taking it to an unscrupulous garage who will charge out the ying yang for something minor.
Thanks for any help

Re: Check engine light

you must have the 4 cyl with two plugs per cyl. if the scanner showed a bad coul issiue, then start by replacing the coils. recheck computer and then fix the next code problem.hopefully this is the only code you will have after coil replacements
