Fuel gauge not reseting after fill up

Ok, this is the second time this has happened - I go to fill up and the fuel gauge does not seem to detect the fill up. The first time was about a month or two back and opening and re-closing the gas cap seemed fixed it. It happened again today and this time nothing I do seems to reset it. What is even wierder is that the fuel gauge continues to go down as I drive,as if I did not fill up at all. Another wierdness factor is that it happened at the same gas station, which I do not usually use. Any thoughts?

Thanks

-M

[EDIT] Oh, yeah, the car is '96 328i

Well, after searching the net I found a solution, although I am still curious as to why this happened

The solution is:

With key in off position remove fuse 31
Turn key to II position
Turn key to off position
Replace fuse 31

This seems to reset the fuel sensor.
