What to do first

Ok im gonna be getting my new 94' talon tsi this coming saturday and I plan doing all the free mods and cleaning the intercooler and all that. I also have a lil money to play with for mods about 300 bucks but i dunno what to do first. I would go intake first but i plan on venting it and dont have the money yet. So i might either get an upper intercooler pipe and save the rest to get the intake at a later time or should i get a gauge pod, boost gauge and manual boost controller first. Should raising the boost yield the most horsepower gain and what do you think I should boost it to if I plan on doing this intstead??? I would like some of you guyz advice b/c i have no idea what to do. Thanks

Re: What to do first

Your best bet for that first $300:

1) boost gauge ($30)
2) air filter, possibly a hard intake pipe ($35)
3) hard uicp ($60)
4) manual boost controller ($30)
5) if you can afford a custom 3" exhaust, that should put you around, or maybe a little over $300

People will strongly advise you against venting the bov...I just put on my Dave Brode uicp and 1g bov and it is much louder than stock 2g, even recirculated. The $300+ it will cost to vent your bov can be MUCH better spent on any other performance or show part of your car IMO, from a turbo upgrade to a sound system!

I have a sound system already so i dont have to worry about that and where can i get an upper intercooler pipe for 60 bucks the cheapest ive seen has been about 175. Also how much louder would it be with hard pipes b/c i can barely hear it stock does anyone have a sound clip or anything or video or no where i find one b/c if its not that loud id prefer to vent b/c i love that bov sound. Also with boost controller would 15 psi be safe with no upgrades or will i be able to boost it higher???

Re: What to do first

You have to have the boost gauge to turn up the boost. To answer your question, I have an Injen intake and 1g BOV and it is soooo much louder than stock. It is actually a different sound though. Is is more of a woosh than the stock whistle. Yes 15psi is very safe on the stock T25. Any higher than that and you are heating the air too much to see any gains. Why work the turbo harder than you have to. If you vent you are going to run into all kinds of problems....the car will most likely sputter at idle and will be rich between shifts. I vented one day just to hear what it sounded like and my car ran like CRAP!

Did you read my first post i said i was getting a boost controller also i got a 1st gen where you get t25 from im running a 14b also i said I was going to convert to a GM MAS and also have a tranlator so I wouldnt run into any probs by venting you should read b4 you post lol. But 15 psi would b about the limit on a stock 1st gen right. Also how much hp gain could I see from this im thinkin (25 - 30) am I right???? oopps i re-read my first post i kinda left out the part about the translator but it was implied

Re: What to do first

1. Don't vent before the translator. You can buy an intake with a recirc fitting and cap it when you get to the point of venting properly.

2. BOOST GAUGE needs to be the very first thing you do...BEFORE free mods that might raise your boost.

3. Fuel pump rewire. This should be done before running much more than 13-15 psi. See www.vfaq.com

4. Please type in a legible fashion. This is not AIM (lolz, l33t, b4), and if you want a thought out response, act like you thought the question through.

Thanks for the info I will try to keep that in mind. But you think I should buy an intake with the bov recirculation hose and just cap it off when I decide to vent. I guess that does make more sense what should I cap it with to keep a nice clean look. Also is TurboSmart a good brand because I just ordered a manual boost controller and also an autometer boost gauge.

Actually if you look, you were questioning getting a MBC i.e indecisive.....and by the way, I said that you had to have a boost GAUGE not boost CONTROLLER. (read Lando's post, part #2 for further clarification)

As far as the t25/14b thing, that was my mistake.

Quote by eclipseracer92 : I would go intake first but i plan on venting it and dont have the money yet.

Nowhere in the original post did you mention anything about getting a GM MAS!!! You only said that you wanted to get an intake first but you wanted to vent and didn't have the money.

While we are taking subtle shots at each other...

Maybe you should remember what YOU wrote before you start getting cocky.

Look for one of those black rubber thingys that slip over the bottom of chair legs. One of those and a band clamp will work fine and not look bad.

Sorry about all that spyderturbo007 I was on two diff forums at once fliping back and forth and didnt realize I didn't everything I wanted to in the first post. But thanks for all the info can't wait till this saturday and I start modding. I plan on first rewiring the fuel pump, hacking the stock air canister, removing the intake silencer and putting in a K&N filter for now as the intake goes until I get some more money. I will then do the basic fluid changes and change sparks plugs etc. Install the boost gauge and pillar pod I got and after I get done with all that put on my turbosmart manual boost controller (are they any good) and make all the adjustments.

Just make sure you have a boost gauge before you start trying to boost more. Fuel pump rewire is also a great suggestion that I overlooked...good call Lando.

Depending on the mileage of the car you may want to do the timing belt with your tune-up. If you don't know how to do it yourself, make sure you have a good bit of money set aside for that.

The T-belt looks brand new so I dont think I will need to change it ive been researching some sites and they said something about when cranking up the boost on a stock car that it can be dangerous running 15psi for longer than a few seconds is that true if so what would it be safe to set it at with a MBC and whats the best way to do adjustments on it should i just turn it a little and drive and see what I get as my max boost or is there an easier way to do it sorry im a lil new to turbos. Also should I do the boost control solenoid mod before I install the MBC or will it not make a differance if I do it or not???? Im confussing myself I cant stop thinking about the what ifs and all that or am I worrying to much
