what is the easiest way to tell the two of them apart?

No. The 420a is in gs/rs. The 4g63 is in the turbo cars GST/GSX

Re: Eclipse engine 420A or 4G63

The 420A sits at about slightly top left-ish, if your looking at your car with the hood open. The 4G63 should have mitsubishi and 2000 on the valve cover and is located near the center...as i see it. Oh and yeah, the 4G63 will blow the pants off the NT 420A so that helps to0 (unless your RS-T, hehehe)

Has anyone or know anyone that has swapped a Mitsu Evo motor into their Eclipse? Can it be done? How much does the evo motor go for, I know it's for awd car, can it be swaped in to a fwd car?
Why does the Evo and GST/X motor have the same engine code? Where does the power difference come from, if it's the same motor?

I have a 92 GS with a 4g63. I guess 1g's don't have the 420a. The engine type should be on the firewall somewhere.

- Evo 8 Motor...possible with money
- Evo 8 motors go up for at least $3000, and again its possible to go FWD with the money, but why would u waste money on building one?
- Same engine code?....hmmm becuase both are used as 4G63 eninges
- Power Difference comes from the 'bigger' turbo and turbines in the Evo 8. The Evo 8 i also heard, they did something with the engine so crankwalk wouldnt occur as much.
well...this is the best i could do...

Re: Eclipse engine 420A or 4G63

The 420A motor comes in all 2nd gen N/A cars. I do believe any 4g63 motor can bolt up to the DSM's it just depends on the drivetran layout that you can run into issues
I can check later when I get home

Re: Eclipse engine 420A or 4G63

just look under the hood or against your firewall.....it should tell you what the motor, tranny, etc. is....or the intake pipe should be on the left side....

Re: Eclipse engine 420A or 4G63

Its a matter of which side the motor is on, and more importantly which way it rotates. The 420A is back asswards, as is the EVO4 and up. If the motor spins the wrong way, you cant just flip it around and run it. The piston pin offset will be on the wrong side of the rod, etc. The motor mounts are also all wrong.

And FWIW, there isnt enough difference between the regular 4g63 in the us cars and the evo 1/2/3 to make it worth the swap. Its the same damn block. But sometimes in purchasing one of those motors or one from a galant you get a 16g and 510 injectors out of the deal. But those are arent very good reasons.
