2000 VR6 EPC light on, no brake lights, no cruise

My son, who is in the Air Force, purchased a 2000 VR6 a few months ago and is having a strange problem with his car. The EPC light has come on, he has no brake lights, and his cruise control won't work. Does anyone know what's going on?

The brake ligth switch was common to fail (it will disable the cruise also). Pulling up on the pedal will sometimes expose the problem, but is not a fix as it needs to be replaced.

I have a 01 Jetta and got a recall notice from VW for the brake light switch a few months ago.

Regarding the EPC light, I had a problem with that too, but it was caused by the dealer pinching the throttle body while they were replacing a defective mass airflow sensor. To get at the sensor they had to disconnect the throttle body and managed to pinch the line when they were reconnecting it. Annoying, but they fixed both problems with no charge.
