Engine Problem

I was getting a stereo system put into my 1999 Chevy Tahoe (amp and subs) and they had to remove the dash to hook the system up to my Alpine deck.

They put everything back on and when they started it up after reconnecting wiring to the battery, the "Service 4WD" light is on and the push button 4WD is stuck in "Neutral". Changing gears from Park to Drive to Reverse does not allow the car to move. You can rev the engine, but the car does not go anywhere in any of these gears. While in "Park", the car can be pushed as if it is in neutral there as well.

The engine starts fine and all electrical systems work, however changing gears with the selector does nothing. I had it towed to a local dealership where it is sitting now.

Can anyone offer any advice as to what is wrong? The dealer gave me a preliminary diagnosis that an actuator may be bad, but I fear the costs of repairs to this type of system. Hopefully the transmission does not need to be worked on or replaced.

Does anyone know what the cost of an actuator is roughly, assuming that is the problem? It is as if the computer is not getting the signal to change gears or something.

Any advice would be appreciated!!!

Re: Engine Problem

they removed your dash? what the hell did they put in there? aught gauge speaker wire?

first off remember "they broke it they fix it" they have to return your car to you the way they received it.

and youll want to after you find that the actuators cost about 250$ to replace.

strange thing is it sounds like the sun shell gear is broke, the symptoms at least, if thats the case its a tranny rebuild that runs 1900$ at a private shop. i which case get a civil lawyer and go after the stereo shop

good luck hope its something cheap and simple
