Trans swap!

alright, i'm getting ready to buy an 88 GT auto that a local guy is selling. only 800 dollars too, needing just a little body work. might have it as soon as tomorrow if i can get rid of my honda.

anyway, the only problem i have with it is that it's an auto, and i have a bunch of reasons to drive stick... and happen to have a t-5 practically ready to bolt up.

now, i know how to change transmissions, but i've never changed from an auto to a manual before. i have no problem with setting up the drivetrain itself, i'm just worried about two things: controls and wiring. specifically, what i need to do to the wiring to bypass the neutral safety and trans controls as well as wire up the clutch switch. and installing the clutch/brake pedal assembly.

for the pedals, can i just go get the clutch/brake pedal as an assembly off a junkyard stang, remove the old brake pedal and bracket, and bolt it right up? or will there be complications? is there already a plate i can remove to route the clutch cable through?

i was just going to get part of a stock clutch switch harness and splice it into the starter exciter wire... but i don't know what to do about the neutral switch wiring. any ideas?

and one final question: will the auto driveshaft work with the t-5?

thanks guys

Re: Trans swap!

I did a swap here about 4 months ago. The hardest part of the hole thing is pedal assembly. everything else easy compared to that. you have to relocate the speedo cable so that you can put the clutch cable in that hole. I didn't hook up the switch on the pedal for the clutch and can start the car with out having to put the clutch in. I like the fact that I can be outside the car and turn it on. there is a site that does the step by step swap. I'll look for the site and give it to you later.

Re: Trans swap!

if you look at www.westcoastfords.com they have a swap on there tech area. good luck! it took me 3 days to do it by myself and never have done it either. If I were to do it again I would start on the trans and then the pedals. I was so pissed by the time that the pedals were in that I almost stopped. Like I said in the last post once you finish the pedals everything else is cake.
