1999 GTP Computer Display

I recently had the Pontiac dealer replace the radio/CD player. I took the car back to them because the cd player was not working properly after they changed it.

The second time I picked the car up, the computer display (that shows MPG's, oil % use, miles to empty, etc.) was only partially light up. I think they somehow messed up the display when changing the radio. They say its a coincidence that it happend when we took it to the dealer. They want $500.00 to replace the unit. They said something about a "burned crystal"?
Can someone tell me if it is possible to damage the computer display when replacing the radio CD player?
Should I beleive the dealer when they say it was just a coincidence that it got damaged when it was in the shop?
Please help, thanks,
Miguel
