car dead

any suggestions or help thanks. Had my 95 camaro in a parking garage for a hour while doing business, went to leave and turn the key to start it and nothing. Checked battery ok lights worked, radio etc all worked but nothing in turning the key not even a grunt. loaded on a trailer and got it home what a blast pushing a car on a trailer on the third floor parking garage. At home checked all fuses inside and out, changed the battery, totally disconnected the viper alarm system with ignition fail safe and still nothing. noticed when turning the key the security light on the panel flashing.

Re: car dead

Sounds like the Vehicle anti theft system.. You can check the wiring at the starter, it may have loosened up..
Also, test for power at the starter with a wire tester while someone trys to turn the car over..

Re: car dead

Not real familiar with the vats systems on the 4th gens but it should be similar to mine.. The wiring is notorious for breaking off inside the lock cylinder

Check the resistance of the resistor pellet in your key.. Write it down.. Then if you follow your steering colomn all the way down to where all the wires come out, there should be a small orange wire at a connector.. Disconnect the connector, put your key in the ignition, then measure the resistance between the two terminals on the steering wheel side of the connector.. It should be the same as the resistance of the key

Re: car dead

Same thing happened on my old 95 v6. It is the PassII key system. The only fix for mine was to buy a new ignition cylinder and set of keys. Cost about $200 to get it and it installed. If the thing sets for 2-3 min with the security light on and won't turn over, i'm 100% sure its that anti-theft system.

Re: car dead

Just incase you don't know: The PassII system runs electicity through that "chip" in your key. The chip is just a piece of metal with a set amount of resistance. If the resistance doesn't match what the computer thinks it should be, the security light stays on and the car is physically impossible to start. The light turns off and you get another try at it. This defferes a theif from trying numberous sets of chips to just find the right one. I was told trouble just occurs when that cylinders connectors to test the resistance wear out and the system starts to read the wrong reading. Just so you know...

Re: car dead

It might also be the neutral safety switch if it's an auto trans. Try moving the shift lever while turning the key.
