Do you have to buy Duplicate Keys from the Dealer?

Does the 2002 Grand Am require a "special" ignition key that you must buy from the dealer (ie: Does it have a computer chip inside) or can I just have a duplicate key made up anywhere and will it work in the ignition?

you should be able to see the chip on the key if its there i would think.... least thats the way ive seen the other keys.....where ever you go to have a key made should be able to tell you if they can duplicate it

I don't know about that, because I work at WalMart and I've never heard of any problems with copying keys, we have a spinning rack full of blank keys, and all we have to do is match the key pattern (size, and lines down the key)
But just go to a hardware store and ask them that would be the easiest way

i think you can see the chip on it. If it does you might hafta go to the dealership. I dunno, i never had to copy one with a chip. I would do what fluffybunny said and just take it somewhere and they'll tell ya if they can do it for you or not.

If you have the passkey anti-theft system installed on your car then you will have to have the dealer make a copy unless your locksmith is able to make gm passkey keys. Majority of locksmiths aren't equipped to do these types of keys so you won't be able to get it at your local home depot, wal-mart, k-mart, or any store that does keys on the side.

Re: Do you have to buy Duplicate Keys from the Dealer?

For my dads 99 ford ranger we had to have a dealer make a new key, cuz we went to walmart and they said they couldn't copy it because of a chip. But i dont think grand ams have em. My dad's 02 grand am key was coppied just fine.
