Question dumb question

hey guys, i've been workin on cars for a few years now and recently my lil bro finally started gettin into them. when he has questions i try to answer em and help him out but the other day he asked me one i didnt kno. Why does the gas pedal make u go. what does it connect to?? does it run to the trottle body??

It connects to the throttle body unless it's a compression ignition (diesel) engine, in the later case it connects to the fuel pump. Or in the case with newer cars it connects to a sensor which give a signal to the electronic control unit, in the case of spark ignition engines (gasoline) the throttle is controlled by an electric motor or in some racing cars by a electro hydraulic servo.

To make it more simple:
Gasoline engine: Pressing down on the gas pedal lets more AIR into the engine. That is all. The extra air then either sucks more fuel out of the carburetor or in an EFI engine, the ECM senses the extra air and throttle position and delivers more fuel.

Diesel engine: It increases the amount of fuel delivered into the cylinders. There is no change to the amount of air being drawn into a diesel engine, unless the engine revs change.
