For the past 7 months (january-July) my 91 Camaro's starting has been acting up. At first I thought it was the starter, after having the starter fixed it didn't have a problem for about 3 weeks then it starting having the same problem. The Problem: When the key is turned the starter makes a click (just once per turn) but doesn't start.
What I've done: 1)replaced the starter, 2) tested the battery, 3)changed keys. When I changed keys I didn't have any problems with starting the vehicle for about 2 weeks. I'm just about fed up with the problem.....can anyone give some advice on what I should look at or get done with my car? Would this put a big dent in someone's pocket book? |

Re: 91 Camaro V6. 5spd. Ignition Problems
Have you checked your battery output and your alternator output? Is the charging system working properly?? If not you more likely need an alternator. If this is ok, check your connections to your battery and starter relay. Are they tight? Might be a loose connection there which is not transmitting the power you need.
In my opinion, I think its your charging system (alternator output). Have an amp load test done on your battery to |

Re: 91 Camaro V6. 5spd. Ignition Problems
I just got the Output checked for the Alternator and Battery. Both came out good. I got it checked at an Advanced Auto Parts store and the manager told me about how he had to replace his ignition switch and how much of a pain it was. Do you think that it could be the switch. The key does have chip on it. The problem happens randomly and I never know when it will happen. I've had it happen to me in the morning and in the middle of the day after starting it many times without a problem. Any other suggestions? thanks.

Re: 91 Camaro V6. 5spd. Ignition Problems
Also...some days I don't have any problems. Usually when the problem happens I turn the key off and put it back in or I'll jiggle the key in the ignition...half the time that works right away and the other half it takes a few more trys.

Re: 91 Camaro V6. 5spd. Ignition Problems
that's a good possibility, ignition switch could be faulty. Try some tests on the ignition circuit in your steering column see what you find there.
Hopefully that helps and you find the problem.

Re: 91 Camaro V6. 5spd. Ignition Problems
could be ignition switch, could be VATS, before they break, sometimes the wires just wear though, and cause an inttermittant starting problem.

Re: 91 Camaro V6. 5spd. Ignition Problems
A friend told me to try some kind of ignition cleaner. Should I try that before checking out the wires in the ignition?
