P 0720 Code

Hey Guys and Gals:

If you get this service code on a '99, replace the output shaft sensor on the rear of the transmission. The sensor is gray in color and located on the drivers side and takes a 1" socket to remove.

If this sensor fails, the check engine light will come on and then lateryour vehicle will go into a "Limp Home" mode.

Another one of Chrysler's Bright Ideas. Transmission sensor failure and cannot drive the dang thing.

Re: P 0720 Code

I recently received this code and know the tranny is starting to slip but works OK in 1st gear.
Is this what you mean by Limp Home mode?

"Limp Home Mode" Occurs when an error occurs to the computer that it can't resolve. When this happens the PCM defaults all of its setting to factory presets, i.e. Shift points on the Trans, fuel/air ratio "crappy gas milage" everything. This happens so that the vehicle can be driven to a service facility to be fixed and not leave you stranded on the side of the road. Pretty good Idea if you have ever been stranded miles out from town unable to drive your vehicle. I hope this helps. If anyone else has a better way to explain this please educate us all. Take care and good luck!

After replacing the sensor do I need to disconnect the battery to reset the or clear the code and get it out of limp mode?

Yes, I would disconnect the battery and let it sit for a couple of minutes before you restart the vehicle. then the computer will re learn the proper settings. It may take as many as 10 starts and stops. This can be done through normal daily driving. you do not need to start and stop the engine ten times before driving the car. Just disconnect the battery let it sit and then reconnect. Good luck!
