4WD Service Light

Hello to all, the service light of my 1998 GMC Yukon is on. I contacted the dealer and was told to pull the fuse and that would possibly reset the system. After reseting the system the vehicle would not go forward or backwards. I called back to the dealer and was told to disconnect the battery which I did and now the vehicle sounds as though it is engaged in 4wd low. When placing the vehicle in Park, it makes a clacking sound as though it's not fully engaged. I am a soldier in Germany who knows very little about cars. I have been to three mechanics and given three different stories.
1. A 4wd control module is needed
2. The transfer case need to be preplaced
3. An actuator is needed
Does anyone have an idea of what may be wrong with my vehicle and is this something that I can repair myself? Also, any recommendations on a good repair manual for "do-it-yourself" instructions for this vehicle. Thanks for your time and cooperation.
JR
