the fast and the furious question

ok, when the cars in the fast and the furious (especially the supra) shift into gears, why does it make the sound like it is a pressurized shift? I dont really know how to describe it, but look at the movie and listen to the shifting. If you hear it you will know what i mean. It jsut doesnt sound like a real shift.

It's from the blow-off valve. Which are equipped on turbocharged cars, to relieve excess pressure during shifts.

it could be the sound of the turbo spooling up, which will make a kind of sucking/whistling sound when you hit the gas. the blow off valve sound goes off when they take their foot off the gas, which closes the throttle body. (like Xplod civic said) It releases the many pounds of forced air that is still in the intake pipe from going back into the turbo causing lag and basically damaging the turbo.

damn you didn t know what a blow off valve sounds like or a turbo spooling up. especially you 4ndrms i thought you knew a little something about cars from some of the other posts i have read that you wrote. But yes its the blow off valve hisssing you can hear it. Its funny though last weekend i was waiting to get into a club outside and this 300zx accelerated hard and went to shift and it had the loudest dumpvalve i have ever heard it scared the shit out of most the girls that were there. It sounded like an airbrake on a bus multiplied by 5.

No...i didnt know what it sounded like...sue me. Look im not all that fluent in "car" yet and im doing my best to learn as fast as i can....that why i posted that post.....the only way to learn is to ask right? So dont criticize. At least i dont claim to know all about cars like some people i know. I can admit i am clueless on alot of things, thats why i ask.

yea i remember when i used to not know what a blowoff valve sounded like but there is not mistaking the lovely sound of a turbo spooling up....also in f and f in the first scene with the eclipse he shifts gears like 7 times

relax!! i wasn t downin you or nothin it just suprised me that you didn t know what it was. I don t know everything and never would claim to so it was cool that you asked it just was a shocker to me that you didn t know. Now you do so its all good. Everytime i hear a turbo spool it makes my skin crawl its the sweetest sound i can think of.

i knew what a bov sounds like but i didn't know what that noise was when he got on the gas was.i'm only 16 so i don't know everything

FnF did a crappy job on some of the sounds. I know what your taking about, and I don't think it's the BOV you are referring to. They made this metal-clanking noise, like the shifters were mechanical or something. When all 4 cars lined up to race, and they all threw it in gear to take off, it was a gay metal clanking noise, like the shift gates are bent to hell.

silvercivicgrl: I noticed the multiple shifts at that scene too... must be one of those custom Quaffe 7-speeds :silly2: Again, they made the metal-clanking noise with the shifts on that part too. You can hear the BOV too, but theres definitely a different sound accompanying it. Stupid Hollywood.

you know when the rx7 races and when he hits the gas it goes to this animated thing it goes through the engine and out the exhaust,well it shows pistons,rx7s don't have pistons

Since when DIDN'T rotaries have pistons :sun: Noticed that too.

Funny story about pistons... I run a forum. I made a post "RX-7 High-Compression Pistons for Sale..." I had tons of serious replies, mostly non-rx7 owners of course. Finally, someone stated the obvious, "Wait, RX7's dont have pistons!"
