fuel pump installation

I have an 88 Ranger and have no fuel pumping from the fuel pump. There are no clogs in the lines prior to the pump ( already checked ). I have a 2.0 4-cylinder with a mechanical fuel pump. Does anyone know if I insert the fuel pump armature above or below the camshaft?
