Owner feedback

Thinking about purchasing an X-Type in 2005. I've never owned a jag, and I'm curious as to owners' opinions. I have heard that this model has many minor quirks and some poor design flaws (positioning of nav screen/climate controls etc). Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cool

I bought my first Jag - an 03 X-Type last May. Since then I've put 15K on her with minimal problems. Mine is a 2.5 Automatic with the sunroof/folding rear seat option. My observations:
1. Performance is comparable to the BMW 325i automatic and superior to the baby Benz. The 3.0 X-Type performance is better - falling between that of a a 325i and a 330i. Both the 2.5 and 3.0 Jags are excellent "Grand Tourers", not "hot' sports cars.
2. The car has more interior and trunk room than the comparable BMW, lexus, and baby Benz. The exterior styling is "classic" Jag.
3. The interior is nicer than the competition. Fit and finish are as good as or better than the competiton.
4. The car is built like a tank, and, is pretty heavy for its size - about 3500 pounds. Even so, mine will run 0 - 60 in the mid 8's and loves to run triple digit speeds on interstates. The 3.0 with automatic is a second faster.
5. With AWD standard, the car handles heavy rain, snow, and ice better than any other car I ever owned.
6. Typically the X is a much better buy than its comparably equipped competition. Got mine a good $7k cheaper than its lesser equipped competitors. The Jag depreciates a bit worse, so, factor this in to the deal you make on a new one.
7. The 2002 X-Type suffered from many first year gremlins, and, this appears to be the reason for the negative commentary on this vehicle. The 2003's and newer have been comparable in reliability to the competition.
8. Your happiness with this car, or, its competitors for that matter, will depend a lot on how good your local dealer is. the 10K interval service on the Jag is free - you want to make sure you've got a dealer who can perform the maintenance properly.
9. Mine gets 24 - 28 miles per gallon on 93 octane gas. Gets its best mileage running 80 mph on interstates.
10. I love driving the Jag, and, would have no problem buying another one at this point.

Re: Owner feedback

I've also heard that post 03 most problems have been sorted. However you might want to check http://www.topgear.com/content/my_to...fers/B8/B4/18/ out and see if problems with the newer cars continue to develop.

Re: Owner feedback

Thanks Swoxy- that's a great site. Unfortunately, it confirmed my suspicions regarding the rumors I had heard regarding the X Type. Even the most recent posts (2004) mentioned minor quality/mechanical issues. Nothing major, but enough to make me a little weary.

Re: Owner feedback

Yeah, it's a shame it's mainly quality problems. Most owners love the performance and handling. Keep an eye on it and see what happens.

I can tell you this much I have a 2003 X-Type and it has been a great car a little over 2K on the ODO and not even a burp from the motor trans or anything else. I bought a 4 year unlimited mile warrany for 1500 bucks from the Jag dealer and I took it back after finding a few minor interior issues broken radio bezel broken interior light (previous owners own stupid fault) I hoped they would fix it and BOOM all new Jag parts no charge for parts or labor. This car is my baby I treat it better than most friends LOL LOL and so far it has been great to me. And the driving experience well I dont feel like typing that much but I can tell you, you will not be dissapointed with the experience or other drivers experiences when they comment look stare etc.. at your CAT!!!!

Re: Owner feedback

My husband had BMW's since the 70's up to his last, an E39. My husband has sworn off BMW and went to a Mini Cooper S. But he talked me into trading my Mercedes E320 in for an X-Type (2005) and I have not regretted it one bit! I love the car! It drives so much nicer than the Merc and the interior is far superior. Every chance he gets, he grabs the Jag! We are converts to Jaguar, like the service very much and love the car. We WILL return for another, as long as it's not a cross-over!

Re: Owner feedback

I am going to be getting into a 2002 X-Type stick in march. I know the previous owner and she purchased it new and has had everything dealer serviced since day one. What are some of the major concerns people seem to have with this particular year? I'm primarily concerned with engine drivetrain and climate control.

"7. The 2002 X-Type suffered from many first year gremlins, and, this appears to be the reason for the negative commentary on this vehicle. The 2003's and newer have been comparable in reliability to the competition."

Can you expound on some of these gremlins?

I sell cars and what I've seen to be very common is people expect a lot more out of a $30k+ Jaguar, Lexus, Benz etc than they do out of a $13k Hyundai. So when little things (very relative term) happen they tend to complain about it a lot more than if the same stuff was happening to a Hyundai, Honda, Ford etc.

Re: Owner feedback

We bought a used X type 2 years ago and my wife has loved it. she also has a M-B SLK32, so the x type is her everyday driver. The car had 9K miles on it. The one big issue is our dealer service in San Diego is off the chart bad. At 34K we had it in for radio reception and a hard shifting tranny--thunking or a slipping feeling. Our dealer said no codes were showing and this is how the automatic tranny works. We had our 40k service in December and again ask for the tranny to be inspected. In mid January with 36K miles and 40 days beyond warranty the tranny failed. Our dealer and Jag didn't want to take any responsibility. They finally agreed to supply parts but we will have to pay for the labor--$2,000..
Having to take my dealer to court and Jag's negative posture will alert me to never buy their product again or reccomend.
Jag has fixed nothing in their frequency of repair--Look at the resell.. 50 cents on the dollar in the 1st year does not bode well for resell values..
I should have none there was a reason I paid $20 for a 3.0 with luxury pkg and onloy 9 miles..
Take my advice--buy another make..

Re: Owner feedback

again. this is why you dont bring the car to a Jaguar dealer or realy any dealer for that matter. new car dealers barely brake even on new car sales, there is very very little profit on new cars. You think because there is $2k markup from invoice to sticker they pocket $2k? Not even close, imagine the electric bill and climate control for a showroom, now the salesperson has to get paid off that car, the sales mgr has to get paid, the F&I guy has to get paid and all the overhead needs to be covered...when youre done there's nothng. these places thrive off the service dept and especialy with customer whom they kno have money they will take advantage of you at every turn.

one you should never buy an automatic anyway and 2 when you thought there was a problem you should not have quit until someone took that tranny apart and then told you there was nothin wrong. or you go back every single day and take up the service advisors time every single day, eventually something will get done

yeah resale sucks on Jag, any British car really, Land Rover is horrendus too

My advice to you if you go shopping for another used entry - lux model. Go to a reputable dealer and get a certified used one with an extended warranty. Had you done that with the Jag, you'd have been covered under warranty out to 7 years - 100K miles. Jag has one of the best certified used car warranties out there - don't understand why you didn't take advantage of it. Secondly, if your original dealer doesn't address your problem to your satisfaction - go to a differnet dealer. Just went through that with an 05 Chrysler. My dealer fooled around for 3 months trying to fix a problem. I went to another dealer and the problem was fixed in 4 hours - no sweat.

And pay a very hefty premium for it. Atleast 7-8k more than you would buying from a private party.

If you want a nice luxury car you buy it from a private party and then just go buy a warranty if youre that worried about it. You can generally go to a dealer and buy an original warranty afetr the fact even if you didnt buy the car there.

If you go that on a Jag, you're looking at about $3500 to pay for the inspection and the factory extended warranty. In addition, you'll per required to correct any deficiencies (worn-out brakes, tires, other non-warranty items) before the car can be certified. AAA quoted me $3800 for an aftermarket warranty package, and, still required a $200 inspection on top of that.

Re: Owner feedback

on a 2002 X-Type w between 75-100k a supreme plus for 36m/36k would run $1865 w/$100 deductible. including rental, towing and roadside
