Transmission/Speed Sensor

I have a 98 Windstar (made in Canada) that sometimes will not shift out of 2nd gear. The RPM's go higher until I let off the gas then it will shift. Also, the speedometer sometimes will bounce wildly or not work at all. This morning the cruise control would automaticly disengage at 55mph.

I have had the speed sensor replaced twice in two months and it seems to help for a while then the problem begins again. I have been to two Ford dealers and they don't have a clue. One actually wants to rebuild the transmission for $2,700.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Just went thru this with my 1996 windstar. Dealer tried to push new tranny on me.. Told him to get screwed. The tranny's in these cars are tied into the EGR system rather tightly. I had the Transmission Speed Sensor replaced - helped a little. But that was by my mistake.. I needed the Vehicle Speed Sensor replaced and got it confused. Anyway, it's only a 50.00 part. Have the Vehicle speed sensor replaced, and the Transmission speed sensor replaced. - both feed info into the PCM etc. and are cheap to replace. Tranny Speed Sensor was 27.00 and the Vehicle Speed Sensor was 50.00 Then have all EGR problems checked. I had a couple of cracked vacum lines. Had tech replace them and wamo.. 100 % great. Tranny hasn't slipped or gone wack SINCE> ...100 % cure..... Don't fall for a new tranny...it' wont cure it if you have EGR ssytem problems....
