computer wont pass inspection

When I try to have my 98 ford ranger inspected for the new NJ DMV computerized inspection it comes up with an error on the inspection computer that it experienced a communication failure with my trucks computer. New Jerseys new inspection laws require their computer to be hooked up with the trucks OBD II system in order to perform emissions testing. Yet when I take my truck to my mechanic, he can read all the engine diagnostic info from his scanner and says he has no clue why the inspection station can't communicate. Why would it work on one and not the other, I have no codes and all systems show up as ready. I've tried to get inspected three times at different stations with the same results.
Im not sure anyone has heard or knows anything on this problem since it is a new system and is probably rare in other states but im afraid how much it may cost if I end up replacing the computer.

got it fixed

I guess the fourth time is a charm, after stumping a few mechanics with my problem I tried another inspection station and after messing with the connector he got it to connect. He said the connector they use does not have a very tight fit so he had to move the connector around until he got a signal. Once that was done the truck passed inspection without a problem but what a pain, almost 2 months running around trying to find someone to fix this and its just a bad harness they use.

I know what you mean with the NJ laws now. This state keeps getting worse. I would just say take it to a local mechanic that hopefully you know that does inspections and pay them to put it in if you cant pass you the state. BTW, where NJ are you from?

200mudder, you have to realize one thing about new jersey, this state is a bitch at everything, so complaining won't do you any good. All this state cares about is money.

Re: computer wont pass inspection

Come to California. What you guys have in NJ is nothing. California smog tests has what you have but it also requires the vehicle to be on a dyno so they can measure the emissions at idle and under load. Best advice before taking a vehicle for smog/DMV test is change your air filter, look around to make sure all vacuum lines are attached and you have a gas cap that works. And most important make sure your engine is at normal operating temperature.
