Talking Hyde's New Dyno

I redynoed Hyde today.
The only changes on Hyde since last year's tune were the addition of a Walbro fuel pump and a Ross Machine Racing Manifold. I know Tom @ Ross and everyone else on here is going to be super excited to see these results since the only real change was just the manifold.

I want to thank Eric and Benny at World Motorsports (Chris Rado's Shop ~ they were awesome to deal with!)

Manifold is here:
http://www.rossmachineracing.com/mr2intake.html
(search show-n-shine" for my threads with the powder coated pics)

Last year: Street tune (29 psi FP): 15 psi (boost) = 258 rwhp
This year: Street tune (30 psi FP): 15 psi (boost) = 302 rwhp
This year: Race tune (40 psi FP): 15 psi (boost) = 312 rwhp

(race tune is a bit more aggressive)

Your eyes are not deceiving you, the manifold made 44 RWHP on a 198,000 mile engine! I do not believe any other manifold has done that.
Here's the kicker. I had a boost leak AND we did not really "tune" the car. We actually used the "tune" NoShoes gave me, but I upped the FP 1 psi.

BIG BOOST
Last year: Race tune (35 psi FP): 20 psi (boost) = 308 rwhp
This year: Race tune (40 psi FP): 20 psi (boost) = 344 rwhp
This year: Race tune (40 psi FP): 22 psi (boost) = 351 rwhp

The lack of big increase from 20 psi to 22 psi is most likely due to the boost leak.

Again this was with a boost leak and we did not make any adjustments on the SAFC or the VPC from last year (lack of time).
There is absolutely more power to be made with the car the way it sits.

Torque actually stayed about the same and I did lose some low- and mid-range power.
You will note on the dynos that in the mid-range it got pretty "fat" (rich) ... so there is more power to be tuned in there, we just did not have the time to look for it today.

I went for a very short ride @ 20 psi after the dyno and I managed to miss every gear! ... the car screams to redline now. Notice no drop off on the graphs, it just keeps climbing. I am going to have to alter my shifting habits to get used to this.
My 235 street tires had zero traction for all of 1st on a heatlhy launch ... :headbang

351 RWHP video (notice the water injection spraying out before the TB, that is where the leak is):

hmm.

Are these manifolds mass produced, can we buy one for ourselves?

And congrats on the impressive specs.

Dayum.

Um, can Layla borrow one of those engines until I have enough for that Rover 3.5L V8?

These are custom pieces that are made-to-order.
I linked to the manufacturer in my initial post.

Re: Hyde's New Dyno

now jeff.. i remember you said you converted the AFM to speed density,... what does that entail? what is the exact function of a VPC?...i am vaguely familiar with this. Is The S-AFC all the tuning device? so you basically just took the numbers that "no Shoes" gave you and set them?

i like that manifold too. What about the TVIS? do you still have this ? what is its purpose? does the JDm engine gen III have this as well?

Re: Hyde's New Dyno

The VPC makes the car speed density. By installing it, you can (and should) remove the AFM.

For tuning I am using the VPC, SAFC and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

I went with the same SAFC and VPC numbers "NoShoes" gave me before, BUT we added more fuel pressure to account for the extra air that the manifold offered. There is a bunch more power in this set up if we actually tuned the numbers more.

The manifold eliminates the TVIS completely. It also elilminates the cold start injector and the entire EGR system

The TVIS closes 1/2 of your intake valves at low rpm to give the engine more torque ... as soon as you start rolling it opens up both valves. I will not miss it.

Re: Hyde's New Dyno

Sure ... there are EGR block off plates that you can buy and there there is a way to disable the TVIS; however, the parts of it will still be "in the way" of the air stream.

You can take the TVIS out of the intake manifold and fill the holes.

Re: Hyde's New Dyno

i guess they put it there for a reason... meant to help with low end... fuel economy bla bla bla that sort of thing plus i think it helps when engine is cold... when you're running though it does nothing!

that is one UGLY manifold my friend... one very ugly and very effective peice of equipment! I want one! JUN also make one but at like 20 times the price! So you really just changed the manifold and the fuel pressure? or was the first tune just the manifold with the previous fuel pressure?

Re: Hyde's New Dyno

drazhartd, TVIS gives you a little extra low end torque, the EGR is for emmissions and the cold start helps when starting the engine in cold weather.

TRD2000, to each their own I love the way the manifold looks and regardless, I'll take funciton over form. As for your tuning question, I am not sure what you mean by "first tune"??
I tuned the car last year with what I had and sicne then I only added this manifold and upped the fuel pressure.

youngvr4 , thanks man

hmm... I hope it would still be possible to start in the cold without TOO much hassle...

then again, I live in AZ.

Those numbers are sick! Congratulations. Should be able to get some kills on the street with that thing.
